Akshay Kumar, barring his slightly exaggerated clothing, is a fun and charming Lord Krishna. The likes of Om Puri, Govind Namdeo and Mahesh Manjrekar add to the film, but Mithun Chakraborty as the master puppeteer of religious deceit is a show stealer. Shukla is a lucky man to have a fantastic cast at his disposal. The way Rawal’s Kanji bhai single-handedly fights the system is heroism at its best. It’s an emancipating thought, one that cleanses the filth of the system and makes you want to stand up and clap. Imagine every fake religious Baba and Saint shoved into a room like cattle and that room being exploded by C4. Having played devil’s advocate, one has to concede the reason this film works is because it blows modern as well as archaic religious beliefs to smithereens. It feels like a thorn in the side of an otherwise good-hearted film. What court of law gives precedence to emotion over protocol? Director Umesh Shukla chooses to follow formula and that forces the need for suspension of disbelief. But as he’s doing so he’s miraculously discovering resources, allies and friends with unrealistic ease. Kanji bhai is as smart as Chacha Chaudhary and he uses his wit and strong reasoning skills to outsmart the wily religious heads as well as lawyers and the media. But the biggest problem with a film that preaches a logical solution to the blind religious nature of our society is that it takes too many creative liberties. After all, a film that sets out to defunct religious myths and malpractices is possibly the Satyamev Jayate equivalent of cinema.
